Crooked Fence Farm Vermont

Connecticut River Valley, Putney, Vermont

About the Farmer

The Aplin family settled on this site overlooking the Connecticut River in 1789. A farm ever since, it came into our care in 2005.

I am a lover of textiles, learning to knit and sew from my mother. In my younger days I did custom dressmaking, often with handwoven Irish woolens and lovely English and Indian cottons. A dream come true, I now tend a flock of Romeldale/CVM sheep, a herd of cashmere goats, numerous finely feathered chickens and three barn cats.

Romeldale and CVM grow very fine, “next to your skin” soft wool in a range of natural colors. Some raw fleeces are sold to handspinners and some are reserved for myself to wash, card and spin. The majority of the fiber is sent to a small mill here in Vermont where it is processed into roving and yarn.

Along with the sheep’s natural whites, browns and greys, I use natural dyes to add color to the palette.

When time permits I welcome visitors and those interested in shepherding, tours of the farm.
